In 1642, this English family of Sturdy received a patent of land from Charles I and settled in a place called Ballyconnell in Caven County, Ireland. For nearly two hundred years the family lived there as English gentlemen, which brings us to Richard Sturdy, 1736 - 1832, and his wife Margaret. About 1830, at least three of Richard's descendants came to America, Oswald, Richard and Hugh.
Hugh Sturdy, son of John Sturdy and grandson of Richard Sr., married Elizabeth Shaw in Ireland, came to Canada, and settled in Goderich, Ontario, where many of their descendants still reside. The old homestead, over one hundred years old, built of dressed stone, is kept in good repair and is still in use by the family. At one time it was the only house in the "woods" between Hamilton, Ontario, and Lake Huron, a distance of one hundred miles.
